Dual Certificate in General & Special Education Transfer Request

Program Overview

Relay’s Dual Certificate in General and Special Education is a two-year master’s degree that prepares teachers to work with exceptional learners in a range of settings. Graduate students in either Residency or a general education major who have successfully completed the first year of Relay’s Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) program are eligible to transfer to the Dual Certificate in General and Special Education program in their second year.

As a student transferring into this program you will be pursuing two teaching certificates and thus, you will take Teaching Exceptional Learners coursework exclusively in the second year of your two-year master's degree program. Teaching Exceptional Learners (TEL) coursework will prepare you to teach students whose needs are not being met by general education pedagogy alone. You will learn how to describe individual students’ strengths and needs in academic, social-emotional, and cognitive domains (such as memory, language, attention, and higher order thinking). Then, you will learn how to design and implement specialized instruction aligned with individual students’ needs. By developing this set of advanced teaching skills, you will be well equipped to meet the needs of the diverse learners in your classroom.

If you are interested in a career in Special Education or know that you will be working closely with exceptional learners in the near future, the Dual Certificate program offers a great opportunity to develop your skills while earning a master’s degree at Relay. However, pursuing this option is an accelerated pathway. If you decide to complete your MAT in your single content/grade specialty first (ie. not completing a transfer now), you are always eligible to apply to Relay’s one-year Advanced Certificate in Special Education in future years. This is a one-year program that will prepare you for your initial license in Special Education.
